Testimonials:
In November 2002 my wife, Mari, accepted a position with Michigan Tech University and our family decided to come to Houghton, Michigan for a visit. It would be 10 months before we would make the move from Kansas. We arrived in January 2003 to look at the campus and to conduct a brief house-hunting trip to Houghton. But, the limited availability of houses on the market made building a home the logical option. Near the top of our list of things to do was to find a builder.
We had a pretty nice floor plan in mind and it was critical that we find a builder we could trust. With the recommendation of our now new neighbors , we contacted Ed Panke of North Country Builders. We spent several hours with Ed explaining our preferences and expectations, since we would not be here to watch the house being constructed. Ed took us to see his house and after a very nice visit I said to Ed, If you build our house as well as yours, you have the job. Ed guaranteed that he would. As luck would have it, Ed also owned the perfect lot in Woodhaven Estates for our walk-out ranch floor plan.
Ed kept in constant contact via phone and fax to consult and verify all details of the construction. The entire process was very painless and stress-free. Ed, his crew and sub-contractors were professional every step of the way. End result: one beautiful, sound and well-built home for the Buche family.

During the spring of 2001 my wife, Karen, and I sought a builder for the house we intended to have built on the shore of Lake Superior near Houghton, Michigan. Since we are from Houston, Texas, this process was not easy because we knew no one personally who had built a house in the area. We interviewed two large contractors and three smaller ones including Ed Panke of Ed's North Country Builders and selected Ed.
We were not disappointed. Ed and his crew were wonderful and did a superb job. We wanted a very high quality house and were concerned that we might not accurately convey to Ed what "high quality" meant to us. But Ed did not let us down. We got at least as good quality as we had hoped for. Not only Ed's crew but each of his subcontractors and their crews did excellent work and Karen and I are pleased to consider them all friends.

When we found the perfect lakeside property on Portage Lake, we had to take the house that came with it. The lay- out of the house was ok, but the outside was very unattractive. We had a clear idea of what we wanted to accomplish, and it was going to be a major renovation.
After talking to most of the big, well-known building contractors in the area, we met
Ed Panke. We soon realized that we had struck gold. Ed immediately understood our concept, and had some good ideas of his own.
We wanted a lodge-style home with rustic qualities that would be in harmony with our beautiful surroundings. We designed a fireplace, open to both the living room and the dining room. Eds talented crew perfectly implemented the design, and his sub-contractors did beautiful stonework to finish the job. Ed designed a large covered porch with a screened section, and again, his crew did the job to perfection. A lot of hand-crafting and great attention to detail went into the construction.
A year after the first stage of the renovation, we tackled the kitchen. We had a carefully thought-out plan, and Ed and his crew did the job extremely well. The plan required the removal of a wall and reinforcement of the ceiling. The completed job is a truly wonderful kitchen that is a treat to work in.
The outside of the house has a new look also. Ed stripped off the vinyl siding and replaced it with rough-sawn cedar. A dark green shingled roof and green trim were the look we were striving for. A steeper and higher roofline improved the overall appearance of the house. New windows and doors and a cultured stone foundation were the finishing touches.
We recommend Eds North Country Builders to anyone who wants their job done skillfully and with good design insight.
